The PSICH lab examines identifying psychological and social determinants of suboptimal health behaviors and disease self-management among adults with chronic medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease). The lab has a focus on the ways in which common comorbid mental health conditions (e.g., depression and anxiety), disease related distress, and functional support impact individuals’ ability to effectively manage their chronic medical conditions. In addition, our research focuses on identifying mechanisms linking disease self-management behaviors (e.g., diet, physical activity, medication adherence) and disease related outcomes including quality of life, symptom severity, biological indicators of disease control, and patients’ use of medical care services (e.g., primary care appointments, emergency room visits and preventable hospitalizations). Ultimately, the goal of this work is to inform the development of effective interventions to improve disease self-management and reduce morbidity among adults with chronic medical diseases.
